Cascade Cycle Classic
Elijet traveled to the great north woods for the four stage, three day event. Kurt Garbe, a native from the area, was able to check the action and track the jet’s progress.
From day 1:
28th place out of 93 today in cat 3. 2 mins 24 secs off the leader.
Now that I’m racing in cat 3’s, It’s definitely harder, but if all goes well in the 16 mile TT and crit and circuit through Sunday, this could be the best results for me so far in cycling.
Stage 1 RR was amazing; 71 miles, started with a 3 mile climb from the gun, 6 man break, peleton chased throughout the day, not really organizing, another small 1 mile climb in the middle, at mile 35 big crash in center of peleton that i BARELY weaseled my way out of.
During the false flat about half way through the final climb I was trying to claw my way back to the lead pack of 22 or so (1 man remained from the original 6 man break and he stuck it to win, with a few trialing who were ahead of the main 22 man chase) and that was when I caught about 6 other straggler guys (one including mark that strong Canadian that attack at the 2008 superior RR, nice guy) and about 10 of us jelled together by the top, but didn’t reach the man lead group of 22. (Garbe was able to watch the 10 mile hill finish from an illegal roving support vehicle: this climb would absolutely shatter the field!) I had an exhausting 500 meter sprint on a long bending semi-circle for a good finish of the 10 guys I was with.
Just found out, the race started with 94 riders and the last stage 74 finished.
Final standing: from BARELY being able to hang with the elite group on the really hard final stage I went from 34th GC to 26th!
