Swiss and Avondale Crit Results

This weekend had Aggressors Victor Riquelme and Elliot Anderson traveling to Phoenix for the first races of the season here in Arizona.

Charles Schwab/William Hamilton Swiss Criterium-

This was a rather technical course, flat with 3 tight corners. there was very little room to advance in between turns, so positions were contested aggressively.

The Cat.5 race was muddled by 4 crashes in only 30 minutes of racing. Riquelme tested the field with 4 laps to go launching a solo breakaway, but was brought back with 1 lap remaining and finished 5th out of 35.

..

Anderson rode well and stayed close to the front in the Cat.4 race, but in the last lap had 2 riders crash out in turn 1 right alongside him. He was unable to move up and finished 11th out of 25.

Avondale Criterium-

Much less technical than the Swiss Crit, Avondale featured a well swept, wide track with 3 corners and a long sweeping bend coming up to the home stretch. With the proper line, all the turns could be taken at full speed.

In the Cat. 5 race Riquelme moved onto the front of the pack with 5 laps to go and hammered out as hard of a pace as he could, but was unable to escape. Any chances of breaking away were shattered by a large pack of lapped riders blocking the course in the middle of turn 3 on the last lap, resulting in a bunch sprint for the finish.  Riquelme took 6th out of 23, and the second prime lap.

In the Cat. 4/5 race there was a large field of 46 riders, with a blistering pace in the last 5 laps and another bunch sprint for the finish. Riquelme finished 9th and took the second prime lap. Anderson was right behind in 13th.

The Cat. 3/4 race was dictated by a ProCon rider attacking after a prime lap, who at one point had a 30 second lead on the field. ProCon was by far the largest team out for the day, and they were doing their best to not work at all to bring him back.

Team WM got on the front and pulled him back with 4 to go, and there was a bunch sprint to the finish. Anderson did a great job staying in the top ten for most of the race, finished 15th out of 29, and won the third prime lap.

Overall a good weekend for Aggress! 3 top tens, no injuries, and good times had by all.

Aggress is a Tucson-based statewide / regional cycling team formed in January, 2004.As a developmental team for both road and mountain bike racing, Aggress continues to actively – yet carefully – recruit according to a philosophy that emphasizes teamwork in both training and racing tactics. Our focus is to race as a team, utilizing team tactics to get our man the win. We ride in support of our designated racer, with each member in turn supported in the key event(s) of his choosing. We are aggressive when we race, but we behave in a courteous and sportsmanlike manner at all times. We also have team training rides that we utilize throughout the season.
