Tucson Crit Series #1

Saturday kicked off the first race of the Tucson Crit Series hosted by Aggress. The course was the always fantastic P1 Kart Circuit Track. The turnout was decent but not what is could be. I will save that discussion for a later post.

My day started off with the Masters 30+ race. Mrs. Tucson Spokesman was on hand to get a couple of pics.

The plan was to ride conservatively and use this race as a warm up for the pro, 1, 2, 3 race. But there was just too much fun to be had. So instead I rode my ass off, tcs108-007.jpg

and missed the podium by this much.

After round one I was already feeling it and kind of collapsed for a while. Apperently being sick for the past 3 weeks takes a bit out of you.

Warm up for Round 2 consisted of walking the track getting some shots of the Cat 4 race.

Here’s the big sweeper in the midle of the course, take a good line and you can pedal all the way through.

The gentle right into the S turns.

Put your head down out of the S turns and drill it to..

The hair-pin at the far end of the track.

Comming out of the S from the other side.

Then some more shots from the sweeper.

The General  was on hand with his fiery red locks.

An attack on the back straight.

I apologize for not getting the finish but I had to get ready to line up for the pro,1,2,3.

These guys threw-down from the start.

I hung in for a few laps.

But eventually the group split.

And I did what I could to stay with the chase group.

In the end with just 3 cat 3s in the race I stuck it out, and (finishing in this order) got my first podium as a 3. Hey you can only race who shows up. Note that on this “dangerous” course there were only of few crashes (in the lower cat.s) and the worst injury was a bit of road rash.

Aggress is a Tucson-based statewide / regional cycling team formed in January, 2004.As a developmental team for both road and mountain bike racing, Aggress continues to actively – yet carefully – recruit according to a philosophy that emphasizes teamwork in both training and racing tactics. Our focus is to race as a team, utilizing team tactics to get our man the win. We ride in support of our designated racer, with each member in turn supported in the key event(s) of his choosing. We are aggressive when we race, but we behave in a courteous and sportsmanlike manner at all times. We also have team training rides that we utilize throughout the season.
