2009 AZ State Championship Road Race
Sunday the 7th of June was the Arizona State Championship Road Race, held in Globe, AZ. A full compliment of Aggress racers came out – Rick Ellwanger in 65+, Mike Puchowicz, Brent Barber, Bryan Schlegel, and Brian Ten Eyck in Cat.3, and Kurt Garbe, Victor Riquelme, Don Domkowski, and Elliot Anderson in Cat.4.

The course was a 60 mile “out and back”, with a mountain around 10 miles from the start/finish that created a 3 mile climb and 7 mile descent on the way out, which was mirrored on the way back in.
The Cat.3’s brilliantly executed team tactics for the length of their race, sending men up the road constantly, and controlling the front end of the race.

Schelgel on the grinding climb leading up to the finish.
Thanks to some excellent pacemaking by Ten Eyck and Puchowicz, Schlegel got over the climb in superb position, and finished 4th in a photo finish, the best placed out of our team in the 3’s. Brent was in at 17th, Ten Eyck at 26th, and Mike at 29th.
Ten Eyck sprinting to the line in the chasing group.
The Cat.4 men rode aggressively, with Riquelme soloing off the front after an attack on the first climb.

Vic attacks.
He was reeled back in by the peloton a few miles after the turnaround. Two breaks got off the front during the few miles closing in to the final climb, a group of 2 out front and a second group with 5 riders, the second group containing Elliot, who rode very strong all day long. Kurt and Don managed to launch Vic off the front solo, and he bridged the gap. With the break of two still out in front, A ProCon rider attacked the group containing Elliot and Vic. Riquelme chased but could not close it down, and rolled in to a solo 4th place finish, minutes ahead of the peloton and minutes behind the 3 ahead.
Riquelme’s lonely finish
Kurt and Elliot sprinted for 6th and 7th place out of the broken peloton, and Don hung strong, mid pack for 21st place.
Kurt and E finishing strong.
Rick E. had a tough day in the saddle, missing his start and being forced to chase for the entire race. The turnaround point had not been marked at that time in the day, and he was turned around by an official at….some point in the race. He finished third in 65+.
Also notable, Will Butler came out and supported the team in the feed zone, with all of this great photography, and with split times. He has been our unofficial soignieur in chief for countless races this year, and deserves many thanks.
